Latest emissions figures show that we are still losing on climate action

Press Release — 4 July 2025

'The EPA’s draft greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories now published signal yet another year of climate action drift by the Irish State, and an ongoing failure of policy to address the climate emergency. While a tiny reduction of 1.9% in total emissions is welcome, the emissions trajectory for Ireland has been, and remains, so far off what is needed to deliver on Ireland’s international commitments and our own legally binding carbon budgets. The figures only emphasise Ireland’s failure to accept its fair share of responsibility.'

Review of the National Development Plan 2026-2035

An Taisce welcomed the opportunity to comment on the consultation on the review of the National Development Plan 2026-2035.

'The philosophy underpinning the National Development Plan (NDP) is that yet more economic growth is the solution to our country’s social, economic, and environmental problems. Yet, as the world’s warming climate, extreme weather, plummeting biodiversity, polluted waters, and exhausted soils plainly signal, the logic of continuing economic growth has run up against the material reality of a finite planet – a planet that cannot endlessly provide the resources to fuel growth, nor endlessly absorb the pollution that it produces.'

Consultation on Carbon Budgets

'The aim of this consultation is to gather stakeholder feedback from the public on aspects of the Climate Change Advisory Council's latest recommendations for the Carbon Budget periods 3 (2031 – 2035) and 4 (2036 – 2040), ahead of Minister Darragh O'Brien making recommendations to the government.'

Correspondence with the Climate Change Advisory Council

Carbon Budget Calculations:

Ireland's Climate Change Advisory Council is responsible for proposing five-year economy-wide carbon budgets to Government for approval. In October 2021, the Council proposed three five-year economy-wide carbon budgets, covering the periods 2021-2025 (CB1), 2026-2030 (CB2) and a provisional budget for 2031-2035 (CB3). Dáil Éireann approved the budgets in April 2022.

In December 2024, the Council submitted a proposal for a finalised CB3 (2031-2035) and a provisional Carbon Budget 4 (2036-2040).

The following letters share the views of the committee on the council's Carbon Budget calculations. There are two letters on this topic from February and March 2025. The second letter is the Climate Committee's response to the CCAC's reply.
