This year, the festival is particularly honouring the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O’Connell, ‘The Liberator’, a huge champion of Irish equality. An Taisce is providing behind-the-scenes tours of Tailors' Hall on Saturday and Sunday 10-11 May. The tours are timed hourly over the two days. They are free but need to be booked through Eventbrite. There will also be other special events taking place in Tailors' Hall for the festival. The building is the oldest surviving Guild Hall in Dublin. It was built over 300 years ago and it is protected under the National Monuments Act and a designated Heritage site. The building is best known for the series of important meetings held there in 1792 organised by the Catholic committee. These came to be known as 'The Back Lane Parliament'. The Liberties Weavers have an exhibition and talks taking place in Tailors' Hall over 7-8 May. On Friday 9 May, you can experience spoken word performance, music and art exploring themes of change at the 'Liberation at the Back Lane Parliament' event curated by author Caelainn Hogan. On Saturday 10 May, there's an afternoon of storytelling. It's brought to you by Friends of the Iveagh Markets and some of the former traders will share memories of their time there. Join us for a night of storytelling within the potent space of Tailors' Hall, one of the last standing guildhalls, where the merchant tailors met in the same space that generations fighting for freedom planned their struggles, from the United Irishmen to the Irish independence movement. While the legacy of Daniel O'Connell is celebrated, his idea of “the sun of freedom” and the de-facto Catholic theocracy he helped usher also needs to be interrogated. Through spoken word, music, art and performance, an exciting group of voices working across forms will explore the futures we hope for and our own understandings of liberation, within the Back Lane Parliament where so many others have envisioned change.
