An Taisce is delighted to announce that Éanna Ní Lamhna, a former President of our organisation and one of Ireland’s most respected voices in environmental advocacy, has been nominated as an Independent candidate for Seanad Éireann on the Cultural and Educational Panel in the 2025 election.

Éanna’s lifelong dedication to protecting Ireland’s natural and cultural heritage is unparalleled. Over the past five decades, she has been a household name in environmental education, biodiversity advocacy, and cultural preservation. From her groundbreaking work as Head of the Irish Biological Records Centre to her role as President of the Tree Council of Ireland and her tenure here at An Taisce, Éanna has consistently demonstrated her commitment to the betterment of Ireland’s environment and heritage. She is probably known best as a communicator on RTÉ’s Dempsey’s Den and Mooney (Goes Wild), as a gaeilgeoir, and as an author of several bestselling children’s books on the wonders of Irish wildlife.

Why Éanna Ní Lamhna’s Voice Matters in the Seanad

Éanna’s campaign is centred on the idea that healthy biodiversity and functioning ecosystems are critical to addressing the impacts of climate breakdown. As she herself has said, “A vote for me means there will be an independent and knowledgeable voice in the Seanad calling for the continued protection of Ireland's natural and cultural heritage.”

Her platform focuses on:

  • Advocating for strong legislative measures to protect Ireland’s environment.
  • Preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage, including the Irish language.
  • Promoting sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet.

As an Independent candidate, Éanna brings a unique, non-partisan perspective to these issues, ensuring that the voices of all communities are represented in the Seanad.

A Lifelong Advocate for Ireland’s Natural and Cultural Heritage

Éanna’s influence extends far beyond her professional achievements. She is a beloved science communicator, known for her engaging radio broadcasts, television appearances, and accessible books on Ireland’s environment. Her ability to connect with people across generations has inspired countless individuals to care for and protect the natural world.

Her nomination for Seanad Éireann is a testament to her unwavering commitment to Ireland’s future. An Taisce is proud to stand with Éanna as she continues her work to ensure that Ireland’s natural beauty and cultural richness are preserved for generations to come.
